Internal medicine is a specialty branch that deals with the diagnosis, treatments, prevention, and post-procedure care for a wide range of health problems including complex diseases. Only specially trained and skilled doctors provide diagnoses for those with chronic ailments or multiple conditions. Internal medicine specialists or internists provide treatments for conditions like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic lung diseases.
The subspecialty of this branch includes immunology, endocrinology, hematology, oncology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, nephrology, pulmonology, and rheumatology. The internists refer subspecialties to their patients based on the diagnosis and prescribe the right treatment with help of consultation with other doctors. Patients may also be recommended to undergo screening for cancer, in case anything related to it is suspected.
